INTRODUCTION

Ayodhya, the city located on the banks of the holy Saryu River in Uttar Pradesh, is not merely a city — it's an immortal legend, a spiritual pulse, and the city of Lord Ram's birth. Sacred in Hinduism and found in ancient texts such as the Ramayana, Ayodhya weaves together mythology, religion, and history to create an experience that will be etched in one's memory forever.

Over the past few years, Ayodhya has undergone a spiritual and infrastructural revival to become a place of pilgrimage for pilgrims and tourists alike.

GETTING THERE

I traveled to Ayodhya through Faizabad Junction (a mere 6 km away), but today the newly christened Ayodhya Dham Junction and Maharishi Valmiki International Airport have further eased access.

> Tip: For the most comfortable weather and festive atmosphere, the ideal time to visit is between October and March, when the city erupts with festivities like Ram Navami and Diwali.

SHRI RAM JANMABHOOMI MANDIR: THE SPIRITUAL EPICENTER

The primary purpose for which numerous people visit Ayodhya is to pay a visit to the recently constructed Shri Ram Mandir on the revered location that's believed to be the very spot where Lord Ram was born.

I stood in reverence before the majestic Nagara-style temple architecture, adorned with fine details, as "Jai Shri Ram" chants filled the air around me. The impressive environment was electrifying yet profoundly soothing.

> Tip: Photography within the temple complex is prohibited. Dress modestly and expect security frisking.

OTHER SPIRITUAL AND HISTORICAL SITES TO VISIT

1. Hanuman Garhi

Situated on a small hill, this Lord Hanuman temple is among the most popular places in Ayodhya. It's believed that Hanuman dwelled here protecting Ram Janmabhoomi. Step a few steps up and be greeted by a strong idol of Hanuman Ji.

2. Kanak Bhawan

A stunning temple that is said to have been presented to Sita by Queen Kaikeyi following her wedding with Lord Ram. The Ram and Sita idols in this temple are richly decorated and the temple is filled with serenity.

3. Treta Ke Thakur

This temple is said to contain Lord Ram's footprints and features black stone idols said to be as old as ancient times.

4. Saryu Ghat (Ram Ki Paidi)

Evenings here are enchanting with Ganga-style aartis, diyas on the river, and golden light reflected on the water. A spiritual and visual feast!

RAMAYAN CIRCUIT: IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF RAM

Ayodhya is one of the places included in the Ramayana Circuit, including Chitrakoot, Sitamarhi, and Rameswaram. In Ayodhya itself, each lane, temple, and stone speaks the stories of Lord Ram's life and teachings.

CULTURAL AND MODERN TRANSFORMATION

Ayodhya is in a tearing hurry to become a world-class pilgrimage city. Clean roads, improved accommodations, up-to-date transport, light shows on temple walls — and yet it still has its soul and holy ambiance.

Heritage walks, Ramayan-themed murals, and the Ram Mandir Light & Sound Show bring legend to life for the contemporary traveler.

LOCAL FOOD AND SHOPPING

Don't depart Ayodhya without indulging in:

Kachori-sabzi

Jalebi

Pedas from renowned local sweet shops

Thandai or lassi at the ghats

For shopping, visit Ramayana-themed souvenirs, religious texts, diyas, rudraksha malas, and local handloom products.

WHERE TO STAY?

From dharamshalas to 3-star hotels, Ayodhya now has many options:

Ramprastha Hotel

Shri Ramayana Hotel

Dharamshalas around Ram Janmabhoomi

>

Pro Tip: Book in advance during festival seasons — particularly around Ram Navami and Deepotsav.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A pilgrimage to Ayodhya is more than a journey — it's an odyssey of faith, time, and worship. When chants are heard ringing out in temple courtyards and diyas light up the edge of the Saryu, one knows that Ayodhya is where heaven touches earth — a city and town forever alive with the living legend of Ram Rajya.

Jai Shri Ram!
